Commentary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Artsakh on the resolution adopted by the National Assembly of France

04.12.2020

We welcome the resolution adopted on 4 December by the National Assembly, the lower house of the French Parliament, which reaffirmed the key position expressed in the resolution adopted by the French Senate on 25 November on the need for the French Government to recognize the Republic of Artsakh.

We consider it important that the resolution, summarising the position of the French Parliament, strongly condemned the armed aggression of Azerbaijan against Artsakh, unleashed with the support of Turkey and the terrorists it recruited, as well as the crimes committed against the civilian population on the grounds of national hatred.

We also highly appreciate the efforts of the French parliamentarians towards providing humanitarian aid to Artsakh in co-operation with the authorities of France and other European countries, which will be a significant contribution to the effective resolution of the humanitarian crisis that emerged in our republic as a result of the war.

We hope that the resolutions on the recognition of the Republic of Artsakh adopted by both chambers of the French parliament in support of the recognition of the Republic of Artsakh will become a solid political basis for the recognition of the Republic of Artsakh by the French authorities.

We reiterate that the international recognition of the Republic of Artsakh will guarantee the rights of the citizens of Artsakh to live freely and with dignity in their homeland, and will contribute to ensuring greater security, stability and predictability in the South Caucasus region.

The adoption of resolutions in support of recognition of the independence of Artsakh will also give an additional impetus to the political settlement of the Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict, which should be based on the recognition of the implementation by the people of Artsakh of their right to self-determination.
